The EU is introducing its new Import Control System 2 (ICS2), and it brings important changes for anyone moving goods from Great Britain into the EU or Northern Ireland. ICS2 is designed to improve safety and security by requiring more detailed shipment information before goods arrive at the border. This means carriers and logistics providers must submit accurate data in advance, and UK traders will need to ensure the information they provide is clear and complete.

ICS2 applies to goods entering the EU by air, road, rail, or sea, as well as shipments travelling from Great Britain into Northern Ireland. The system replaces the older ICS1 model and introduces stricter requirements, including precise goods descriptions, six‑digit HS codes, and full shipper and receiver details. Vague or incomplete information may lead to delays, holds, or carriers refusing to move the shipment.

For businesses, the key to avoiding disruption is ensuring data accuracy from the start. Providing clear product descriptions and correct HS codes is now essential, and working closely with carriers or freight forwarders will help keep goods moving smoothly under the new rules.

At Barker & Hood, we’re here to support customers through the transition to ICS2. Our team can help review shipment data, assist with declarations, and work directly with carriers to minimise delays and keep your supply chain running efficiently. If you’d like guidance on how ICS2 may affect your shipments, we’re always here to help
